Basketball
Every year, we look forward to coaching both boys and girls basketball teams for kids ages kindergarten - 6th grade.
Basketball for our youth groups (Kindergarten and 1st & 2nd grades) over the last couple of years to allow for a greater focus on skill development. This approach has been very effective in keeping younger players engaged and working on age-appropriate basketball drills. To further support this, we purchased 6-foot hoops for the Kindergarten level, reducing the strain of reaching the basket and allowing players to develop proper shooting form.
Our 3rd & 4th grade division now compete using a 27.5-inch basketball while now playing on 10-foot hoops. This adjustment helps ease the transition to upper levels while still challenging players appropriately.
Finally, our 5th & 6th grade teams continue to experience a great deal of success competing in the Sugar River Basketball League. This league, made up of neighboring towns, was created to provide a safe and practical alternative to longer travel to southern New Hampshire during the winter months. It offers meaningful competition and valuable opportunities that are often hard to find in a small community.
Basketball - Sign ups open September 1st each year and run through October 15th. Late Sign up period then allows for late sign ups, with a $50 late fee.
Sunapee Ice Rink – Closed for the 2025–2026 Season
The Sunapee Ice Rink is now open for the 2025–2026 season and is again located on the Veterans Field infield. Skates are available for public use in the Red Shed warming hut.
The rink is maintained daily as conditions allow, and repairs are made as weather permits. If the rink needs to be closed, this will be clearly indicated by:
- A sign posted at the rink
- The open flag being removed from the building
- A chain placed across the park entrance
It is very important that everyone stays off the rink when it is closed so repairs can be completed quickly and the rink can reopen as soon as possible.
We all love our Town rink and want it open as much as you do! Please help us keep it in great shape by:
- Picking up sticks, trash, and skating aids (such as milk crates) and returning them to the side of the shack each day
- Returning any borrowed skates to the bin you found them in
- Helping keep the warming hut tidy for the next group
Open Gym
Youth Drop-In Sports for grades 1–6 is offered on Saturday evenings from 5:00–7:00 PM at the Sherburne Gym. This program runs from January through February and gives participants the opportunity to use the gym for basketball and some soccer. All sessions are supervised by town volunteers. This year Open Gym Nights were hosted by Peter White. These open gym nights are a great opportunity for kids to get active, play basketball, and have fun in a supervised environment.
This year we will have the following open gym nights for grades 1-6:
• Saturday, January 24 | 5:00–7:00 PM
• Saturday, February 7 | 5:00–7:00 PM
• Saturday, March 7 | 5:00–7:00 PM
• One additional March date (March 14 or March 28 – TBD)
We are also looking for a volunteer who may be willing to help run Adult Open Gym on Sundays from 10:00 AM–12:00 PM at the Sherburne Gym. This is a year-round program that previously had a strong following for a competitive and fun morning game. If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out.
These programs are run entirely by volunteers who are able to host. Background checks are completed for all volunteers. If you are interested in helping out, please contact me at recreation [at] sunapeenh.gov.
