The Town continues to monitor the substance observed in Sunapee Harbor on July 25. The condition did not spread or worsen overnight, and most of the visible sheen has now dissipated.
Town personnel will continue monitoring the harbor over the next several days. This effort is being supported by drone footage, and the Town has established a schedule for continued drone monitoring over the next 10 days. We will document when and where any sheen appears, along with the time of day and harbor conditions, to better understand whether there is a recurring pattern.
Samples collected on July 25 are still being analyzed. Preliminary observations suggest that much, if not all, of the sheen observed on July 25 may have resulted from small amounts of gasoline and oil associated with the significant number of boats entering, leaving, and operating within the harbor. The Town will await the laboratory results before drawing any final conclusions.
We appreciate the assistance of all emergency personnel, the Lake Sunapee Protective Association, and those helping with the ongoing monitoring effort. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.
