The Town of Sunapee, New Hampshire, seeks a service oriented, community-centric, and experienced fire management professional to serve as its new part-time Fire Chief for the On-Call Sunapee Fire Department. The Fire Chief is a crucial member of the Town’s leadership, working collaboratively with Town Management and elected officials to achieve the Town’s strategic direction. The Chief will be asked to establish working relationships and partnerships town-wide and with other agencies, business groups and community members in the pursuit of community safety as a common goal.
Reporting to the Board of Fire Wards and working alongside the Town Manager, the Fire Chief will be expected to work closely with the Town Leadership in addressing the following challenges and opportunities:
- Manage the development of Sunapee Fire Department in its effort to proactively and strategically respond to the community’s growth and changing demands for service.
- Explore innovative solutions to the delivery of fire protection, emergency medical services, including inspections, firefighting and prevention, fire services training, medical calls and first aid assistance to the community.
- The successful candidate will have the opportunity to lead at several levels: as a leader of Sunapee Fire Department, as a member of the Town Manager’s Senior Leadership Team, and as an active participant in the Sunapee community.
- The successful candidate will report to the Board of Fire Wards and will communicate with and collaborate to prepare and submit monthly reports to the Board of Fire Wards regarding the Departments' activities and prepare a variety of other reports as appropriate, including the annual report on activities.

Compensation, Work Schedule and Residency:
This is a part-time/on-call position for on-call Sunapee Fire Department, the work schedule will vary as needed. Compensation includes an annual $50,000 stipend in addition to the on-call rate of pay of $75 per shift. The selected candidate is required to live within 20 minutes of the Sunapee Fire Department ideally within Sunapee or bordering town.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
Successful completion of a background check, which may include verification of employment history, education, criminal records, and other relevant factors
Specialized training in fire department administration.
Ten (10) years prior work experience as a firefighter, to include a minimum of Four (4) years of supervisory duties
Valid NH Operators Driving License
Firefighter level 1
EMR
Hazmat awareness and operations
Working knowledge of MS Office suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (or equivalent); experience with social media preferred.
Contractual Requirements of the position (timeframe negotiable upon hire):
Firefighter II
Valid NH CDL B required with tank/air brake endorsement and CDL med card
Valid Boater License
Fire Inspector 1 (or equivalent)
EMT (Basic)
Fire Officer 1
